“Tuesdays on the Trail” Series in June and July


The Land Trust’s “Tuesdays on the Trail” environmental education series will be offered on nine Tuesdays and one bonus Saturday in June and July.

The programs are fun “windows into nature” that foster awareness of the unique geology and wildlife of North Alabama.

Help encourage green conservation attitudes in the next generation – the land stewards of the future – and make your reservations today!

No cost for children of Land Trust Members.
Non-member cost: $2 per child for all but bat events.

“Green” Treasure Hunting
June 14, 9:00 to 10:30 am

A walk in the woods, a clue (or two) to solve, an object to find…a Treasure Hunt for 5 to 10 year old searchers and their parent/guardian! Each “team” will receive a clue packet suitable for the young seekers of mystery when they arrive at the trailhead. Activity will be on the Wildflower Trail in Blossomwood. Long pants and sturdy shoes recommended.

Navigate with Alabama Outdoors
June 21, 9:00 to 11:00 am

Do you need some direction? Learn the basics of navigation in the woods with instructors from Alabama Outdoors. Meet at the Land Trust Hiker’s Parking Lot at the top of Cecil Ashburn Drive (Blevins Gap Nature Preserve) for a 2 hour navigation hike with instructions. Compass, long pants, and sturdy shoes recommended.

Wildflower Trail Explorathon
June 28, 9:00 to 10:30 am

Explore Wildflower Trail with the Land Trust! Grab one of our nets, buckets, and magnifying glasses as we hop through creeks, turn over rocks, and walk along shady trails. Have fun taking a closer look at plants and animals in our own backyard and learn how they tie into our world. Long pants and sturdy shoes recommended.

Hooray for HERPS!
July 5, 1:00 to 2:30 pm

The Coosa River Science School from the Alabama 4-H Center is proud to present “The Herp Journey at Historic Three Caves!” What is herpetology? It describes the study of amphibians and reptiles. Explore the world of toads…salamanders…snakes…alligators! Learn more about these amazing animals and explore facts vs. fiction. Get up close and personal with some of these amazing “herps”!
Capacity: 30 children (all ages) with accompanying adults. Carpooling encouraged. Closed toe shoes, please. Due to limited parking, reservations are required.

See North Alabama’s Gray Bat Cave!
July 12, 7:00 pm, Sauta Cave near Scottsboro
FREE! No reservations required.

Keith Hudson, Wildlife Biologist with the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Nongame Wildlife Program, will share his expertise on the quarter million Gray Bats of protected Sauta Cave. The Gray Bat colony is the largest roosting colony east of the Mississippi and all the bats emerge about 30 minutes before true dark.
The driveway to Sauta Cave (closed to cars) is located just past mile marker 131 on Hwy. 72 going east toward Scottsboro. Park on shoulder of Hwy. 72 and walk app. 200 yards to observation platform. Attendees should wear sturdy shoes, a poncho with hood, and bring a flashlight.

BONUS Saturday Bat Event: Science is just plain BATTY!
Saturday, July 16, 10:30 to 11:30 am
FREE!

Due to limited parking, reservations are required.Dr. Troy Best, Professor of Mammalogy at Auburn University, will give a presentation about bats at Three Caves. Learn about scientific research – lots of fun and games, too! If mist netting is successful, we may see some live bats! Children must be accompanied by adult.

FROGS! At the Square!
July 19, 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Harvest Square, that is. Come out for a fun evening as we learn about the common frogs of North Alabama. Harvest Square is one of the Land Trust’s newest properties and this event will get the kids hoppin’! Ages 4 to 9 with accompanying adults. Long pants, bug spray, flashlights, and sturdy shoes recommended.

Stories by Bruce Walker at Three Caves
July 26, 6:30 to 8 pm

Join us for the final event of the 2011 “Tuesdays on the Trail” environmental education series as we gather ‘round to hear enchanting stories from North Alabama’s own award-winning storyteller Bruce Walker! Attendees of all ages are encouraged to bring their own chair, beverages, and picnic dinners to Three Caves.
Capacity: 75 children with accompanying adults. Carpooling encouraged. Closed toe shoes, please.
Due to limited parking, reservations are required.

No charge for either bat event.
No cost for children of Land Trust Members.
Non-member cost: $2 per child for all but bat events.
