Beat the Heat: Enjoy Nature Responsibly in Hot Weather

July 31, 2025

Spending time outside is one of the best ways to experience North Alabama’s natural beauty, but during extreme heat, it’s important to take extra precautions to keep yourself and others safe. High temperatures can pose serious health risks, especially during prolonged outdoor activity like hiking, biking, or gardening.

Before you head outside, keep these tips in mind:

Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of water, and then bring a little more. Sip regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to avoid dehydration.

Take Breaks
Rest in the shade when you can and avoid pushing yourself too hard, especially during the hottest parts of the day (typically between 10 AM and 4 PM).

Stay Informed
Check local weather and heat advisories before heading out. If there’s an excessive heat warning, consider postponing your hike or choosing a shorter, shaded trail.

Dress Smart
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are strongly encouraged.

Hike with a Buddy
It’s always safer to explore with someone else. Keep an eye on each other for signs of heat exhaustion, like dizziness, fatigue, or nausea.

We want everyone to enjoy the trails and preserves safely, so please take care of yourself and others.
