Building the River to Gap Vision: 64 Acres on Green Mountain Donated for Permanent Conservation

September 1, 2025

We’re excited to share a major step forward in our River to Gap vision for South Huntsville. The Land Trust of North Alabama has officially closed on a 63.79-acre property on Green Mountain, generously donated by the Kuehlthau family, that will now be permanently protected.

This property is more than just beautiful upland hardwood forest; it creates a vital connection between two existing Land Trust parcels and strengthens our River to Gap vision. This growing corridor will provide important habitat and safe passage for wildlife while protecting the surrounding environment. The land also includes a portion of the Green Mountain Trail with a trailhead and information kiosk for visitors.

The River to Gap project is a long-term Land Trust initiative to create a continuous conservation corridor stretching from the banks of the Tennessee River to the ridgeline of Blevins Gap on Green Mountain. By connecting protected lands across this landscape, the project safeguards critical habitats and water resources, provides safe passage for wildlife, and preserves scenic trails and natural spaces for people to enjoy.

As Huntsville continues to grow at a rapid pace, protecting these connections now is essential. Every new piece of land conserved helps us ensure that the River to Gap corridor becomes a reality.
