Step Into Spring: Hiking Tips for North Alabama Trails

As the days grow longer and the weather warms up, spring is the perfect time to hit the trails and explore the beauty of North Alabama. To help you make the most of your outdoor adventures, we’ve put together some essential spring hiking tips. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or new to the trails, these tips will ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience.
1. Plan Ahead
Have a map, plan a route, and know the hour of sunset. Also, wear sturdy closed toe shoes, take sunscreen/bug spray, and make sure someone knows where you are going and when you will be back.
2. Wait for Trails to Dry
In addition to being slippery, wet trails are easily damaged by foot and bike traffic. Wait a day for trails to dry before beginning your journey.
3. Yield to the Right and Pass to the Left
When hiking Land Trust trails you may encounter other hikers, mountain bikers, and even horseback riders on some nature preserves. Announce yourself so as not to surprise and pass on the left as you move by.
4. Leash Canine Companions
Just as we begin to get more active on the trails in the spring, so does other wildlife. Make sure to keep your dog on a leash to avoid any unexpected encounters with wildlife or with people who may not be as comfortable with pets as you are.
5. Hydrate, Rest and Refuel
You will enjoy your outing even more when you are well hydrated and fueled. Brief rests are also wonderful ways to take a moment and soak in the beauty around you.
6. Enjoy, Journal, and Take Pictures
Enjoy the incredible natural areas that our region has to offer. Leave foliage, artifacts, and treasures on the trail but take journals and/or pictures to record your adventures. Feel like sharing your hiking adventures on social media? Tag the Land Trust!
