Wade Mountain Nature Preserve Grows with New Land Acquisition
A map of the Wade Mountain Nature Preserve highlights the new land acquisition.
The Land Trust of North Alabama has added a new piece of land to Wade Mountain Nature Preserve, continuing our commitment to protecting this important natural area in North Huntsville. The recently acquired property, purchased from the Berkebile family, is located just north of the Fleming Trailhead at the end of Spragins Hollow Road.
This addition falls within the Land Trust’s identified priority area for conservation on Wade Mountain and directly connects to the Davis tracts acquired in 2022. The property features upland hardwood forest and plays a valuable role in expanding the preserve’s protected landscape. By securing this tract, we strengthen the continuity of the surrounding ecosystem and help preserve the natural character of the mountain.
Over the past several years, the Land Trust has focused on acquiring key properties to build stronger connections across the preserve. Strategic additions like this one — whether large or small — are essential for creating a more unified protected area. These connections not only support local ecosystems but also make way for future recreation opportunities, including potential trail expansions and new access points.
Wade Mountain continues to be a favorite destination for outdoor exploration in North Huntsville. With each addition, we take another step toward ensuring this special place remains protected and accessible for generations to come.
