Tollgate Greenway

Thanks to overwhelming community support, construction will begin on Bankhead Parkway.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors and the support of the City of Huntsville, 100% of the funds needed for the Tollgate Greenway Project have been raised. Construction is set to begin in September 2025, and the greenway is projected to open in the spring of 2026.

This exciting project will create a 1.2-mile paved, multi-use greenway following a segment of the historic Toll Gate Road on Monte Sano. Beginning at the Land Trust’s Bankhead Trailhead and connecting with the closed section of Bankhead Parkway, the greenway will provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safe and scenic route along the western slope of the mountain. It will also expand access to nature for individuals with limited mobility who cannot utilize traditional natural-surface trails.

Please Note: During the time of construction, Bankhead Trailhead at Monte Sano Nature Preserve will be closed to the public. Trail users are encouraged to visit another Land Trust trail or preserve while Bankhead will be closed. Information about nearby trails can be found at www.landtrustnal.org/explore.

TOLLGATE GREENWAY

A SAFE SCENIC ROUTE ON MONTE SANO

Your support will give our community a safe and scenic route on the western slope of Monte Sano. The route follows the existing Tollgate Trail, specifically selected for the project because of its already wide corridor, to minimize disruption to the surrounding area.

  • expand outdoor access for hikers, walkers, cyclists, and those with mobility limitations
  • provide cyclists a safe route on the mountain
  • create education opportunities that highlight the history and ecology of the area
  • establish a seamless, paved connection from Bankhead Trailhead to Monte Sano State Park
