Leash Up: Protecting Trails, Wildlife, and Visitors
The Land Trust of North Alabama encourages visitors to enjoy the trails with their four-legged friends. Exploring nature alongside a dog is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of the preserves, but it is important to do so responsibly.
Dogs are welcome on Land Trust preserves, but they must always be kept on a leash. This rule is in place to ensure the safety of pets, other visitors, and the natural environment.

A leashed dog enjoys a walk with his owners.
Keeping dogs leashed is essential for several reasons:
1. Protecting Dogs from Hidden Dangers
Nature presents many potential hazards for unleashed dogs, including snakes, hidden holes, steep cliffs, and thorny plants. Keeping dogs on a leash helps prevent injuries and ensures they stay on designated trails.
2. Respecting Other Hikers
Not all visitors are comfortable around dogs. Some may have allergies, fears, or simply prefer to enjoy the trails without unexpected encounters. Leashing dogs allows everyone to have a positive outdoor experience without disruptions.

3. Keeping Wildlife Safe and Undisturbed
Preserves provide critical habitats for a variety of wildlife. An unleashed dog may chase or disturb animals, causing unnecessary stress and potentially harming the ecosystem. Keeping dogs leashed helps maintain a balanced and undisturbed natural environment.
4. Preventing Dogs from Getting Lost
Even well-trained dogs can become distracted by scents, sounds, or wildlife, making it easy for them to wander off. Trails wind through dense forests and natural terrain, increasing the risk of a lost pet. A leash keeps dogs close and safe.

5. Supporting “Leave No Trace” Principles
Responsible outdoor recreation includes minimizing human and pet impact on nature. Keeping dogs on a leash prevents them from trampling vegetation, disturbing habitats, or leaving waste behind. Pet owners are also expected to clean up after their dogs to keep trails clean and enjoyable for everyone.
6. Following Posted Signage
Signs at all Land Trust preserves clearly indicate that dogs must be leashed. These guidelines are in place to protect visitors, pets, and the environment. Adhering to posted rules ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
