Stay Safe on the Trails This Spring and Summer

As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, North Alabama’s trails become even more inviting for hikers, runners, families, and outdoor enthusiasts. The Land Trust of North Alabama is thrilled to welcome visitors to explore the natural beauty of our region—but with warmer weather also comes a few extra precautions to keep in mind when hitting the trail.

Here are some important tips to help you stay safe, healthy, and prepared during your spring and summer adventures:

Watch for Wildlife

As nature wakes up, so do snakes and other wildlife. While most animals will avoid humans when given the chance, it’s still important to stay alert. Stick to marked trails to avoid accidentally stepping into an animal’s territory. Be especially cautious around logs, rocks, and tall grass—common hiding spots for snakes.

What to do if you see a snake:

  • Remain calm and back away slowly.
  • Do not try to touch or move it.
  • Give it space and wait for it to move away on its own.

Check for Ticks

Ticks are common in wooded and grassy areas and can carry illnesses like Lyme disease. Before heading out, use insect repellent containing DEET or permethrin (on clothing). Wear long sleeves and pants if possible, and stay in the center of trails to avoid brushing against vegetation.

After your hike:

  • Check yourself, your kids, and your pets for ticks.
  • Shower soon after returning home.
  • Remove any ticks promptly and properly with fine-tipped tweezers.

Stay Hydrated and Protected from the Sun

Even a short hike can leave you dehydrated in warm weather. Bring plenty of water and take breaks in the shade if needed. Electrolyte-replenishing drinks are helpful on longer outings, especially if you’re sweating a lot.

Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from UV exposure. Lightweight, light-colored clothing can help you stay cool and reduce your risk of sunburn or heat exhaustion.

We hope you’ll make the most of the warm seasons and enjoy all the beauty our trails have to offer. With just a few safety measures, you can help ensure that your time on the trail is both fun and safe.
