Teaming Up for Habitat Restoration at Beaverdam Swamp

The Land Trust of North Alabama maintains 10 recreation preserves in North Alabama, managing over
100 miles of trails. However, recreation is not the Land Trust’s only priority. The Land Trust is privileged
to own or manage more than 10,000 acres of land for conservation across the top 10 counties of North
Alabama.

Trails and trailheads are one component of our management responsibilities; others include boundary
monitoring, encroachment enforcement, invasive species control, farming, and habitat restoration.
Examples of this work include restoring a once farmed wetland pasture to its natural lowland hardwood
habitat, conducting prescribed burns, mechanical, and hand removal of invasive species, and restoring
eroded areas to pollinator meadows.

Our latest project at our Beaverdam Swamp property, located in Limestone County adjacent to the
Mazda Toyota Manufacturing facility, involved the completion of a habitat enhancement project that
repaired a severely eroded outfall drainage ditch and washout by backfilling the eroded area and
installing erosion control mats to minimize future soil disturbance. To complete the enhancement
project, we seeded 11 acres of the surrounding field habitat with a native meadow pollinator seed mix.

We appreciate the support of our neighbor Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in assisting us with addressing
this serious property issue. Partnerships with entities such as Mazda Toyota, local government, local
businesses, and our super volunteers help the Land Trust leverage limited resources to manage,
improve, and protect the natural spaces we love!
